West Florida Earns Fall Sports Academic Honors
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -The University of West Florida earned accolades in both the Gulf South Conference (GSC) 2003 Fall Academic All-GSC Team and 2003 GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
Stephen Simmons became the eighth player in GSC mens soccer history to earn Academic All-GSC honors in three consecutive years. Simmons is a senior with a 3.83 GPA in forensic studies. The native of North Lauderdale, Fla. ended his West Florida career this past season third in the all-time record book with 44 goals and 98 points.
Brianna Oeser earned her first selection to the GSC Fall All-Academic Team. Oeser is a junior with a 3.69 GPA in the Public Relations and Advertising program. The Niceville, Fla. native became the all-time single-season leader this past season with 18 goals and 37 points. She will enter her senior season third all-time with 35 goals and fifth all-time with 76 points.
A total of 26 Argonaut athletes were named to the 2003 GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll. Six mens cross country players, Caleb Carmichael, Eric Connelly, Jamie Duffell, Craig Henry, Michael Padilla and Scott Poindexter were named to the honor roll. All of the runners were either freshman or sophomores.
The entire womens cross country team earned a selection to the honor roll. The 11 honorees were the most of any GSC womens cross country team. The runners were: Lauren Brooks, Amanda Campbell, Kara Chamberlain, Naomi Evangelista, Summer Forester, Emily McHugh, Alex Norton, Jen Pulmano, Frency Ramos, Laura Ruffner and Elaine Skislak. The runners combined to put together a 3.50 team GPA.
Academic All-GSC Team member Stephen Simmons was the only mens soccer player named to the honor roll. Brianna Oeser was also named to both the Academic All-GSC Team and GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll. Oeser was joined on the honor roll by her womens soccer teammates Noelle Sims, Stacy Thomas and Klara Vrbova.
Four volleyball players earned a selection to the honor roll. Kristy Krause, Kelli McFarland, Cherese Purkey and Brandi Young earned honors in the classroom while helping lead West Florida to a school record 24 victories.
