UWF Homecoming Awards Revealed During Friday Soccer Match
Cavalcante and Galloway Named UWF Student-athletes of the Year
PENSACOLA, Fla. - During the Homecoming festivities at halftime of the men's soccer game on Friday night at the UWF Soccer Complex, the West Florida Athletic Department announced its annual award-winners for the 2007-08 academic year. Women's tennis player Suzanna Cavalcante was named Female Student-athlete of the Year, and men's golfer Matthew Galloway earned Male Student-athlete of the Year honors. Jesse Keroack of the volleyball team and Max Hoggard of the men's basketball team were also named UWF Female and Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, respectively.
Senior Suzanna Cavalcante (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Horacio Bento) capped off her junior season in 07-08 winning the Gulf South Conference Commissioner's Trophy. As the second consecutive UWF award winner, Cavalcante also garnered several other prestigious awards throughout the season. The Brazil native collected her third consecutive GSC East Division Player of the Year award, as well as a third consecutive spot on the All-GSC first team. Cavalcante also collected South Region honors, earning the Arthur Ashe Award for Sportsmanship. A national top five finisher, the junior was also named an All-American in both doubles and singles. With a host of athletic awards under her belt, Cavalcante was also elected as part of the GSC All-Academic first team, earning a 3.63 GPA.
Matthew Galloway (Valrico, Fla./Durant HS) was among the GSC's elite in 2007-2008, earning a second consecutive spot in the GSC Top Ten male athletes. The senior was instrumental for UWF men's golf, as his squad brought home the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championship. With All-GSC first team and All-Tournament accolades, Galloway also earned a 3.45 GPA that landed him a place on the GSC All-Academic first team for the second year in a row. After finishing the season ranked #99 in GolfStat cup rankings, Galloway was named to the All-South Region team followed by All-American honors.
Junior Jesse Keroack (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside HS) is a Psychology major and a member of the UWF women's volleyball team. Keroack played volleyball for Eastside High School in Gainesville. The right side/setter currently holds a 3.91 GPA, highest on her team and third among all UWF athletes. In 2007, she was named to the GSC All-Academic first team. On the court, Keroack is currently ranked third among her teammates with 41 assists so far this season, and has defensively posted 23 blocks.
Junior men's basketball player Max Hoggard (Micanopy, Fla./P.K. Yonge) is a Sports Management major, and currently has a 3.81 GPA. He is ranked seventh among all UWF student-athletes, leading his team as well as all of UWF's male athletes academically. Hoggard appeared in 23 games for the Argonauts last year, scoring 67 points and grabbing 21 rebounds. The forward from Micanopy, Fla. was named to the GSC Academic Honor Roll in the 2007-2008 season.
