UWF Suffers First Defeat at Montevallo Classic on Friday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The West Florida men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night at the Montevallo Classic, falling to Flagler 57-49. The Argonauts faced their first road test of the season, and the loss pushes the record to 4-1. Junior forward Darryl McGhee (Defuniak Springs, Fla./Gulf Coast CC) led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds.
McGhee shot 9-13 from the floor for his 18 points, and he also grabbed five offensive rebounds, blocked one shot, and made one steal. Junior guard Jonathan Jackson (Pensacola, Fla./Johnson County CC) came off the bench and scored 10, shooting 4-8 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
The Argos took a one-point lead at halftime, 24-23, thanks to eight first half points by McGhee. Senior forward Vitor Boccardo (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil/Loyola Marymount) also added six in the first half to provide a spark off the bench. UWF led by as much as five in the first half at the 8:01 mark, but Flagler rallied late in the period to close the gap.
The Saints jumped out to a 12-point lead with 8:56 left in the game, and they did not look back, defeating UWF by eight. Flagler’s John Pietkiewicz led the team with 17 points, and D.J. Ferguson was right behind with 16.
