Four Named to Honor Roll
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior forward Max Hoggard (Micanopy, Fla./P.K. Yonge HS) and junior center Dominique Boykins (Houston, Tex./North Shore HS) of the West Florida men’s and women’s basketball teams were named to the Gulf South Conference Winter Sports All-Academic teams, it was announced on Monday. Hoggard and Boykins were also joined by women’s basketball players Caitlin Salak (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon HS) and Chelsea Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) on the GSC Academic Honor Roll.
Hoggard is a two-time GSC Honor Roll member and was named the UWF Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2007-08. He scored a season-high 11 points in the Argonauts’ loss to Shaw on December 20, and he recorded six points and a season-high seven rebounds in a win over Temple Baptist on December 16. Hoggard has totaled 150 points and 61 rebounds in his three years with UWF. Majoring in Biology, Hoggard boasts a GPA of 3.80.
Boykins is a first time GSC All-Academic Team selection and three-time Honor Roll member. She averaged 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in 2008-09, highlighted by a season-high 15 points in two separate games. In her three years at UWF, Boykins is averaging 8.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, seeing action in all 82 games. The Finance major holds a GPA of 3.92, the top GPA of all GSC women’s basketball All-Academic Team selections.
Salak (Elementary Education, 3.73 GPA) saw action in 14 games this season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 19 rebounds. Turgeon (Marketing, 3.07 GPA) played 22 games, scoring 30 points with 29 rebounds.
The Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must meet all three of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: 1) an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career, 2) a starter or significant contributor to the squad, and 3) leadership, academic curriculum and community service. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Freshman are not eligible, nor is any student who has not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member and passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours towards an identifiable degree program during the year at that GSC member. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
A minimum grade point average of 3.00 is required for the GSC Academic Honor Roll. Qualification for this particular honor is automatic based on G.P.A. and nomination (there is no vote).
