Argonaut Weekly: August 24-30

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Monday marks the first day of classes at the University of West Florida, and the Argonaut athletics teams are preparing for their first week of action.  The fall sports teams start the season at home this weekend, as UWF will host 24 games on campus Thursday through Sunday.  Finally, one UWF golfer competes at the national level.

VOLLEYBALL: The West Florida volleyball team, ranked No. 15 in the preseason AVCA poll, once again opens the season with the Comfort Inn-vitational at the UWF Field House.  All eyes will be on Pensacola this weekend as numerous ranked teams will be on campus for this season-opening tournament.  The Argonauts will face ranked teams each day, facing No. 21 Lewis on Thursday, two-time defending NCAA Division II champion and preseason No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, and No. 12 Central Missouri on Saturday.  The busy weekend for the Argonauts will also include matches against regional opponents Eckerd and Lynn.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: UWF women’s soccer enters the 2009 season as the No. 2 team in the nation after a run to the NCAA championship game in 2008.  The Argonauts return 10 of 11 starters from the historic team, and expectations are high.  The Argonauts kick off the season at home on Friday, facing Florida Tech at the UWF Soccer Complex at 5:00 p.m.  On Sunday the Argos will take on NAIA rival Thomas at 3:00 p.m.

MEN’S SOCCER: The Argonauts are looking for their fourth straight Gulf South Conference championship in 2009, and they will kick off the season at home this weekend.  The No. 20 ranked Argonauts will face Flagler on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and come back on Sunday to take on Thomas at 5:00 p.m.

MEN’S GOLF: Sophomore Ryan Black begins play at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championships today, facing the best of the best in the amateur golf world.  Fans can follow the action live on www.usamateur.org, and the final five days of the tournament will be televised on The Golf Channel (August 26-28) and NBC (August 29-30).  Check www.GoArgos.com for updates on Black’s performance throughout the week.
