PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a busy first weekend for University of West Florida Athletics, with the UWF volleyball, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer teams all hosting their 2009 season openers on campus.  Coming up this week the men’s and women’s cross country teams will open their seasons on the road.  Men’s and women’s soccer will return to their home field, and volleyball will travel west for their first road trip of 2009.

ARGONAUT OF THE WEEK
Paul Willoughby
Men’s Soccer
Sophomore Midfielder

Paul Willoughby (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) scored the first two goals of the season for the UWF men’s soccer team in the 2009 season opener against Flagler on Friday night.  An All-Gulf South Conference second team selection in his freshman season in 2008, Willoughby put the Argonauts ahead with goals in the 25th and 29th minutes, and UWF held the lead for a 4-2 win.  The sophomore now has five goals and four assists in his collegiate career.

CROSS COUNTRY: The UWF cross country teams will open their 2009 fall season on Tuesday at the Choctaw Season Opener hosted by Mississippi College.  The Argonauts will then head west for the Cal State Fullerton Season Opener in Fullerton, Calif. on Saturday, September 5.  Hopes are high for the UWF cross country teams for 2009, as All-Gulf South Conference runner Bailee Hedstrom returns to lead the women’s team and Christopher Hough and Scott Lydick return to lead the men’s team.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-0-0, 0-0-0 GSC)
- 8/28 vs. Florida Tech: 4-0 W
- 8/30 vs. Thomas (Ga.): RAINED OUT

The No. 2 Argonauts got off to a fine start to the season with a 4-0 win over Florida Tech on Friday in the season opener.  Four different players scored for UWF, including returners Shaneka Gordon and Marcela Franco and newcomers Rachel Cutts and Shakira Duncan.  The Argonauts defense allowed just four shots and just one on frame.  UWF was scheduled to finish the weekend with an afternoon game against Thomas on Sunday, but thunderstorms and unplayable conditions caused a rainout.

This weekend UWF will stay in Pensacola and host regional rival Saint Leo on Friday at 5:00 pm.  The Argonauts will come back on Saturday at 7:30 pm to play Warner Pacific, an NAIA school from Portland, Ore.  Fans will be able to follow both games with live stats and live audio online at www.GoArgos.com.

Also don’t forget to tune in to the first ever episode of GSC Radio Live at 1:00 pm CT on Tuesday, September 1, as Head Coach Joe Bartlinski will be one of the show’s first guests alongside North Alabama football Head Coach Terry Bowden.  To listen to the show, visit www.gulfsouthconference.org.

UWF will host Saint Leo this weekend on Friday at 7:30 p.m.  Fans can follow the action online with live audio and live stats at www.GoArgos.com.

MEN’S GOLF: Ryan Black of the UWF men’s golf team competed at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championships last week, finishing the first two rounds of stroke play tied for 230th.  Black had trouble on the first day on Monday, shooting an 84, but he rebounded on Tuesday with a 73, shooting him up the leader board over 50 positions.  Despite his excellent second round, Black failed to make the cut for the match play portion of the championship.  The Argonauts’ men’s golf team is scheduled to start its fall schedule at The McLaughlin hosted by St. John’s on September 18-19.
