PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 2009 Pack it Pink Volleyball game highlighted the previous week in University of West Florida Athletics, as the Argonauts volleyball team raised $1,343 and counting in support of breast cancer research.  The UWF cross country teams picked up wins in their final regular season meets, and both soccer teams picked up critical Gulf South Conference wins.  This coming week will be quiet in Pensacola, as it marks the first time this fall that each team will be on the road.

Men’s Cross Country

Freshman Donald Davis (Pensacola, Fla./Pine Forest HS) picked up his first cross country individual title over the weekend at the MC / Watson Ford Invitational, finishing the 8k race at 27:27.  Davis led the Argonauts to the team title as well, the first for the UWF men’s cross country team since last year’s Gulf Coast Stampede trophy in 2008.

Junior Forward

Junior Shakira Duncan (Kingston, Jamaica/Darton College) led the top-ranked UWF women’s soccer team to its 12th straight win at Christian Brothers over the weekend, scoring the first hat trick for the team this season.  Duncan leads the team with 15 goals and 37 points, and she has scored in all but one game this season.

- 10/10 @ MC / Watson Ford Invitational: 1st of 7

The West Florida women’s cross country team took first place in the seven team race Saturday morning at the MC / Watson Ford Invitational in Clinton, Miss.  The 6k race was run under wet and muddy conditions, but the Argos ran a strong race, led by sophomore Bailee Hedstrom, who covered the course in 24:04 for the individual title.

Freshman Karyssa Tourelle-Fallon finished third overall with a time of 25:19, while sophomores Kelbe Beck and Stacy Paton were right behind in fifth and sixth place, respectively.  Beck raced to a 25:26 time, while Paton covered the course in 25:31.

The Argos will compete next at the Gulf South Conference Championships in two weeks at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala. on October 24.  UWF is currently ranked fourth in the South Region, and the Gulf South Conference has four of the top six schools ranked in the top 10 of the region.

- 10/10 @ MC / Watson Ford Invitational: 1st of 8

The UWF men’s cross country team battled wet and muddy conditions at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss. and managed take home the first place trophy Saturday morning at the MC / Watson Ford Invitational.  UWF relied on five top 10 finishes to total a team score of 27, to out-distance second place Southern Arkansas with 50.  Mississippi College finished third with 61 points in the eight team event.

Freshman Donald Davis led the Argos in first place with a 27:27 time, followed by sophomore P.J. Orgass in second place in a time of 27:47.

The Argos will compete next at the Gulf South Conference Championships in two weeks at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala. on October 24.  UWF is currently ranked eighth in the South Region, and the Gulf South Conference has six schools ranked in the top 10 of the region.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (12-0-0, 3-0-0 GSC)
- 10/10 @ Christian Brothers: 6-0 W

The top ranked University of West Florida women’s soccer team remained perfect and improved to 12-0 on the season with a 6-0 shutout over Christian Brothers this past week. Forward Shakira Duncan netted a season high three goals to improve her team leading season total to 15.

Duncan got the West Florida offense going early and often as she netted the first three goals of the match for the Argos. Twin sisters Shaneka and Shameka Gordon also tacked on goals in the match, their 13th and third of the season respectively. Dernelle Mascall would cap off the scoring attack in the 81st minute with her eighth goal of the year to put the Argos up 6-0.

In the coming week the Argos will hit the road once again for matches against Alabama-Huntsville and Delta State. On Friday night the Lady Argos will take on a 6-5 Charger squad looking to improve on their 2-2 Gulf South Conference record. Then on Sunday the women will travel to Cleveland, Miss. to face a sub .500 Delta State team who will be looking for their first GSC win of the season.

VOLLEYBALL (13-8, 4-1 GSC)
- 10/9 vs. Valdosta State: 3-0 W (25-22, 25-14, 25-19)
- 10/10 vs. West Georgia: 3-0 W (25-10, 25-14, 25-17)

No. 24 West Florida went 2-0, earning two more conference wins over the weekend. They improved to 13-8 on the season, and moved to the second place spot in the GSC East with a 4-1 league mark. The Argonauts also head their annual Pack it Pink breast cancer awareness match on Saturday, earning $1,343 and counting as they continue to raise money and participate in the local breast cancer walk at the end of the month.

The Argos swept conference opponent Valdosta State (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) to gain sole possession of the second place spot in the GSC East. Chelsea Wilhoite was the offensive leader with 12 kills, followed by Patricia Gandolfo who reached double-digits with 10 kills. The Argos scattered their digs, led by Maddie Staub with seven, as Wilhoite, Tricia Tirabassi, and Caitlin Schaffstall each tallied five. Gandolfo put up five blocks in the win, including one solo.

The West Florida volleyball team held their third annual Pack it Pink match on Saturday, earning a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-17) sweep of GSC opponent West Georgia. Following the festivities, the Argonauts downed the Wolves in three sets. Wilhoite was named as Player of the Game for leading the offense with nine kills on a .353 hitting percentage, followed by Gandolfo who collected nine. The senior also served up five aces in the match, tallying four in just the first set. Kimberly Clark was the defensive dig leader with six on the match, followed by Kristen Wimer and Wilhoite with five each. Gandolfo led with four blocks, followed closely by Gonzalez with three.

Sophomore libero Maddie Staub earned her first-ever Gulf South Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week accolade last after a 39-dig performance in UWF’s 3-0 showing last weekend. The award marked UWF volleyball’s second Defensive Player of the Week nod this season.

The Argonauts hit the road this week to participate in a South Region Crossover hosted by the University of Tampa. West Florida will first take on No. 14 Saint Leo on Friday morning at 11 a.m. ET, followed by an evening matchup with No. 9 Tampa, and a contest with Florida Southern on Saturday morning.

MEN’S SOCCER (7-4-1, 3-0-0 GSC)
- 10/10 @ Christian Brothers: 3-0 W

The University of West Florida men’s soccer team improved to 7-4-1 and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference action last week with a 3-0 shutout win over Christian Brothers University. The Argos’ Paul Willoughby led the offensive attack, scoring a season high two goals, including the eventual game winner.

With the match knotted in scoreless tie, Willoughby found the back of the net in the 54th minute to put the Argos up 1-0. Richard Dixon then connected with and Jay Mainville on a nice cross inside the box for a one touch shot to the near post, giving the Argos a two goal advantage.  It was Willoughby once again the 89th minute who broke a couple of defenders and the keeper for the open net goal, his second of the match and sixth of the season.

This week the Argos will hit the road once again as they travel to Alabama-Huntsville and Delta State for their final two GSC matches of the season. On Friday night the men will square off with the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville in an undefeated GSC showdown. Both teams sit atop the conference and will enter the match as the only two teams to remain unbeaten in GSC play. On Sunday afternoon the men will take on a struggling Delta State squad in their final GSC match of the season. The Argos look to stay perfect against the Statesmen and improve their record to 6-0 all-time.

The Argonauts duo of sophomore Kevin Ducros and sophomore Leandro Ferreira will return to action in Mobile on October 15-18 at the ITA Small College Championships.  Ducros and Ferreira will attempt to become the first Argonauts doubles team to become ITA national champions since Jens Gerlach and Matt Wallhead won the title in 1996.

- 10/5-6 @ Aflac / Cougar Invitational: T-7th of 21
- 10/10-11 @ Philadelphia Big Five Invitational: 7th of 17

In a rare two-tournament week for the No. 14 UWF men’s golf team, the Argonauts picked up a pair of seventh place finishes.  First at the Aflac / Cougar Invitational, UWF moved up five spots from the first day to place in a three-way tie for seventh at 12 over par.  Freshman Hinrich Arkenau played consistently, finishing in a tie for 25th individually at two over par (72-72-144). Sophomore Carlos Rodriguez finished one stroke off Arkenau at three over to tie for 33rd (75-70-145).

The Argos then finished the Philadelphia Big Five Invitational hosted by Temple in seventh place, shooting a final day 309 to give the team a total 608 for the two rounds.  Rodriguez and junior Otto Bonning turned in a pair of five over par 76s in the second round. Rodriguez ended up tying for 11th place overall with a total of 148 (72-76), while Bonning finished two strokes back at 150 (74-76) to tie for 21st.

The Argonauts will finish their fall season close to home next week at the Indian Bayou Classic in Destin, Fla. hosted by Gulf South Conference opponent North Alabama October 19-20.

The UWF men’s basketball team and first year Head Coach Bob Stinnett announced the 2009-10 schedule last week.  The Argonauts will open the regular season at home against Columbus State on November 16, and GSC play will open against West Alabama at home on January 7.  The complete schedule can be viewed online at

The UWF baseball team will host its Fourth Annual Golf Scramble on Friday, October 23 at Stonebrook Golf Club.  The event will consist of four person teams and will kick-off with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. CT.

The cost of the event is $85 and will include lunch, a Nike golf polo, cart, green fees, and range balls. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place teams as well as for par 3 closest to the pin, par 5 longest drive, and hole in one contests.
