ARGONAUTS OF THE WEEK

Valissia Brathwaite

She was flawless for a season-high .615 clip against No. 14 Saint Leo, with eight kills over just two sets. She served as the individual match kill leader with 10 kills alongside teammate Chelsea Wilhoite in a loss to Tampa. The senior tallied just five errors over three matches, and averaged 3.1 kills per set for the Argos. Brathwaite hit a combined .364, providing an efficient swing in the Argonaut effort.

Richard Dixon

Sophomore Midfielder

Richard Dixon’s (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach HS) two second half goals highlighted the UWF men’s soccer team’s 6-0 win at Delta State on Sunday.  The sophomore midfielder is now tied for fourth on the team with three goals, and he also ranks fourth with eight points (three goals, two assists).  Dixon has also served an important defensive position in the midfield, helping the Argonauts to allowing just 0.79 goals per game.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (14-0-0, 5-0-0 GSC)
- 10/16 @ Alabama-Huntsville: 4-1 W
- 10/18 @ Delta State: 10-1 W

The top ranked University of West Florida women’s soccer team kept their regular season Gulf South Conference winning streak alive by extending it to 40 games with wins over Alabama-Huntsville and Delta State. The Argos, now 14-0-0 on the season are off to their best start in school history and have tied the program’s second longest winning streak set in 2007.

On a cold and cloudy Friday afternoon, the Argos took to the pitch against the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville. An early lead gave West Florida the cushion they needed as they would go on to win 4-1 Shaneka Gordon and Shakira Duncan supplied all of the offense, scoring two goals each in the contest.

On Sunday the Argonauts tied a season high 10 goals in their 10-1 win over Delta State. Duncan led the offense once again as she posted four straight second half goals in a 20 minute span to give the Argos a comfortable lead over the Statesmen.

This Friday, October 24th is the big GSC showdown with No. 24 ranked North Alabama. These two high powered offenses will square off with each other at 7:30pm at the UWF Soccer Complex which will serve as UWF’s Homecoming game.

MEN’S TENNIS
Kevin Ducros and Leandro Ferreira of the West Florida men’s tennis team won their final two matches in the Division II doubles back draw, placing fifth at the ITA Small College National Championships in Mobile over the weekend.  The UWF duo defeated Scott Bradley and Georgie Perez of Metro State, 7-5, 6-2 in their first match, and then in the fifth place match the Argonauts defeated Diego Gimenez and Joseph Boesing of Southern Indiana 6-4, 6-3.

Ducros and Ferreira fell to top ranked Andrey Boldarev and Alex Grubin of Concordia (N.Y.), the eventual Division II doubles champions, in the first round of the national tournament 7-5, 6-4.

MEN’S SOCCER (8-4-2, 4-0-1 GSC)
- 10/16 @ Alabama-Huntsville: 0-0 T (2OT)
- 10/18 @ Delta State: 6-0 W

The University of West Florida men’s soccer team completed their Gulf South Conference schedule this weekend as they remained unbeaten at 4-0-1. Both contests ended in shutout fashion as they tied Alabama-Huntsville 0-0 in double overtime before routing Delta State 6-0 on Sunday.

On a chilly Friday afternoon in Huntsville, Ala. the Argos battled UAH to a scoreless tie in double overtime. The Argo offense outshot the Chargers 14-7 in the contest but could not take advantage of opportunities late in the match to score and take home the victory.

After being shut out on Friday the offense exploded for six goals in 6-0 shutout over Delta State. Freshman Stephen Munoz recorded the eventual game winner by knocking in the first goal of the match to get the offense going in the 13th minute. Richard Dixon led the attack with consecutive second half goals to put the match out of reach for the Statesmen.

The Argos will take to the pitch this Friday, October 24th at 5:00 p.m. against William Carey University for UWF’s Homecoming Game.

VOLLEYBALL (13-11, 4-1 GSC)

- 10/17 vs. Florida Southern (at Tampa): 0-3 L (13-25, 23-25, 23-25)

The Argos suffered a tough loss to Sunshine State opponent Florida Southern on Saturday morning to close out their competition at the South Region Crossover. The Argos dropped three straight sets (25-13, 25-23, 25-23) to the Mocs, as their record fell to 13-11 overall.

West Florida will then return to Gulf South Conference action on Friday evening at 7 p.m., facing Alabama-Huntsville on Senior Night.
