TOWSON, Md. – Senior goalkeeper Courtney Jones (Panama City, Fla./Bay HS) of the No. 1 West Florida women’s soccer team was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team on Tuesday, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Jones is an Exercise Science major and holds a GPA of 3.86.

Jones’ selection marks the first soccer player at UWF to earn Academic All-American honors as selected by CoSIDA and just the fourth total.  UWF men’s tennis player Jens Gerlach was named to the at-large second team in 1997, and softball teammates Blake Baskin and Sandy Morgan were second team Academic All-Americans in 2000.

Jones has spearheaded a UWF defense that has allowed just eight goals all season, and she has averaged 0.37 goals allowed per game, ranking her fifth in NCAA Division II women’s soccer.  The Argonauts (20-0, 7-0 GSC) will take their undefeated season into the third round of the NCAA Tournament this weekend, facing No. 9 Rollins at Carson-Newman on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
