PENSACOLA, Fla. – Four pitchers and two position players make up the University of West Florida baseball program’s 2010 signing class, as announced by UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat on Thursday. The six member signing class includes three players from central Florida, two from Georgia and one from the state of Alabama.

Five freshman and one junior college transfer highlight the 2010 incoming class. Ben Hawkins, a left-handed pitcher and the lone JUCO transfer, comes to West Florida from Wallace-Hanceville Community College in Alabama and highlights the incoming class of pitchers.

In addition to Hawkins the Argos will also add another lefty and two right-handers into the pitching rotation. Kevin Peters, a lefty who hails from Edgewater High School in Orlando, Fla. will join the Argos following his senior year.

Rounding out the incoming pitchers are freshman right-handers Josh Hollingsworth and Kutler Lane. Hollingsworth, a 6’1 righty from Mobile, Ala. will look to add depth to the bullpen and compete for a starting job next season. Lane, another central Florida prospect, will pitch for the Argos after his senior year at Lake Brantley High School in Orlando.

“We feel like we have a very strong incoming class with a lot of athletic ability,” said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. “Pitchers are always one of our top priorities during the offseason. Without quality pitching you just are not going to win a lot of ballgames.”

Garrett Gleiter, a 5’11 outfielder from Orlando and Chris Wright of Roswell, Ga. are the two incoming freshman outfielders. They will enter their freshman campaign next season looking to fight for a starting job out in the outfield.

“Hopefully these guys can come out and make some kind of impact for us in their first season with us,” stated Jeffcoat.

This season’s West Florida baseball team will feature 19 returning players, including 16 letterwinners from last year’s team which reached the Gulf South Conference Semifinals and finished with an overall record of 33-23.
