Argonauts Claim First Win of Season Against Cameron

Williams Scores 21 in 76-71 Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Senior guard Tiffany Williams (St. Petersburg, Fla./North Florida) scored 21 points to lead the West Florida women’s basketball team to a 76-71 victory over Cameron as part of the first day at the UWF Tip-Off Classic on Friday.  The Argonauts improved to 1-1 with the win, while Cameron picked up their first loss and fell to 1-1.

Williams poured in 4-8 from three-point range to lead UWF, and she also added five rebounds and three assists.  Senior guard Amy Drake (Niceville, Fla./Winthrop) added 11 points and a game-high five assists, while freshman Emily Erland (Pegram, Tenn./Harpeth HS) came off the bench to score 12 and grab five rebounds.

West Florida started strong and outscored the Aggies 42-32 in the first half.  Williams had 14 of her 21 points in the opening frame, while senior Dominique Boykins (Houston, Texas/North Shore HS) added nine first half points as well.  The teams played close in the first half, including five tied scores, but the Argonauts pulled away at the end of the half to open up a 10-point lead on sophomore Kirstin McIntyre’s (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Florida Southern) basket with 1:14 left.

The Argos stayed hot early in the second and led by as many as 15 on a Williams three-pointer at 17:37.  Cameron stayed within striking distance, and starting at 11:02 the Aggies went on a nine-point unanswered streak to tie the game at 56.  UWF pulled back ahead and took an 11-point lead on a three by junior Lauren Fagler (Gainesville, Fla./Pensacola JC) at 4:51, and the Argos would hold on to clinch the 76-71 victory over the Aggies.

Josie Stewart led the way for Cameron with 24 points on 10-16 shooting from the field, and she also picked up five steals on defense.  Three other Aggies scored in double digits, including Luv Rattler with 12, Amber Schroer at 11, and Alexis Williams at 10.  Stewart led all players with eight rebounds.

UWF shot 50 percent from the field while Cameron finished at 44.1 percent.  The Aggies outrebounded UWF 37-32, and they also had 38 points in the paint compared to 34 for the Argos.
