PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 9 West Florida women’s tennis (7-6, 3-1 GSC) resumed competition against Gulf South Conference rival No. 6 Valdosta State (8-2) at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex this Saturday morning after the match had to be continued from its start Friday afternoon due to illumination issues when the Blazers were leading the Argonauts 4-1.
The Blazers captured the lead already in doubles with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. At No. 2 doubles senior Paulina Ojeda (Santiago, Chile/Benedictine) and freshman Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ateneu HS) fell 8-4 to Tina Trautmann and Raphaelle Durante. The Argonauts responded with a win at No. 3 as junior Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Seminole CC) and freshman Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ateneu HS) defeated Dominique Rothlaender and Sonya Haggstrom 8-4. Natali Gumbrecht and Hollie Bees from VSU then defeated junior Taylor Brewster (Fergus, Ontario/Centre Wellington District HS) and sophomore Caitlyn Baines (Ft Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) 8-6 to give the Lady Blazers the 2-1 lead entering singles.
As the singles action began, the Lady Blazers quickly captured two wins at No. 5 and 6 spots. Sonya Haggstrom from VSU defeated Luiza Sonnervig by a 6-2, 6-2 score, while Hollie Bees from VSU defeated Mariana Sonnervig from 6-4, 6-2. At this point the matches on court were stopped and pushed to the following day, with Valdosta State carrying the 4-1 lead.
The Argonauts needed to win all four remaining matches on the court Saturday morning to defeat the conference opponent. However, the Argonauts were able to capture only two wins, ultimately falling short to the Blazers. No. 33 Ojeda was upset by No. 40 Raphaelle Durante 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, securing the Lady Blazers the team win over the Argonauts. Baines got a win over Dominique Rothlaender at No. 4 as the player from VSU retired from the match when Baines was leading 3-6, 6-4, 4-1. Brewster came close to upset No. 9 Tina Trautmann and dropped the lead in a super tiebreaker for the decisive set, falling 4-6, 7-6, 10-4 at No. 3 singles. To highlight the match for the Argonauts, No. 16 Oliveira came back from a set down to upset No. 7 Natali Gumbrecht, defeating the top VSU player 3-6, 7-5, 10-0.
