UWF Trio Selected to GSC Winter All-Academic Team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – One player from the West Florida men’s basketball team and two from the UWF women’s team were selected to the Gulf South Conference Winter All-Academic Team, it was announced by the conference office on Monday. Max Hoggard (Micanopy, Fla./P.K. Yonge HS) of the men’s team and Dominique Boykins (Houston, Texas/North Shore HS) of the women’s team each earned their second career selections, while Tiffany Williams (St. Petersburg, Fla./North Florida) of the women’s team was a first time selection.
In addition to the GSC All-Academic Team, the conference office also announced the GSC Winter Academic Honor Roll, including all student-athletes with a minimum 3.00 G.P.A. Joining Hoggard, Boykins, and Williams on the GSC Honor Roll were freshman Peter Connole (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle Christian Academy) from the men’s team and freshman Emily Erland (Pegram, Tenn./Harpeth HS), sophomore Kirstin McIntyre (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Florida Southern), and senior Caitlin Salak (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon HS) from the women’s team. Qualification for this particular honor is automatic based on G.P.A. and nomination.
Hoggard (3.87 G.P.A., Pre-Med Biology) was a leader for the UWF men’s basketball team in 2009-10, starting all but one game and averaging 12.8 points per game. The senior forward shot .466 from the field, .376 from three-point territory, and .779 from the free throw line, and he was the Most Valuable Player at the UWF Christmas Classic, leading the Argonauts to wins in both games during the tournament. In addition to his second GSC All-Academic selection, Hoggard also earned a spot on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team earlier this season.
Boykins (3.59 G.P.A., Business Finance) finished out her UWF career in 2009-10 with another solid season, playing in all 28 games and averaging 8.3 points per game. The senior center led the team and finished second in the GSC in field goal percentage at .597, and she also earned all-tournament team honors at the UWF Argo Classic and UWF Holiday Classic. The two-time GSC All-Academic Team selection finished her career seventh in school history in rebounds (466) and second in field goal percentage (.539).
Williams (3.25 G.P.A., Sports Management), an All-GSC second team selection this year in her second season at UWF, started all 28 games for the Argonauts and was second on the team with 11.9 points per game. The senior shooting guard was a tournament hero for the team early in the season, earning Most Valuable Player honors at the UWF Tip-Off Classic and the UWF Holiday Classic.
The Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must meet all three of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: 1) an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career, 2) a starter or significant contributor to the squad, and 3) leadership, academic curriculum and community service. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Freshman are not eligible, nor is any student who has not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member and passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours towards an identifiable degree program during the year at that GSC member. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
