Rob Walden Named Assistant Sports Information Director at UWF

Walden to Start August 9

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Rob Walden as the department’s Assistant Sports Information Director.  Walden will start in his new position at UWF on Monday, August 9.

A native of Woodruff, S.C., Walden comes to UWF after working in athletic media relations at the NCAA Division I and II levels.  Walden graduated from Newberry College in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, and he has also worked at Brevard College and Charleston Southern University the last two years.

“We are excited to bring Rob on board here at West Florida,” said Sports Information Director Matt Rowley.  “He has a passion for college athletics, and he has experience in a wide variety of areas.  I am looking forward to working alongside him and together promoting our exceptional coaches and student-athletes here at UWF.”

At his most recent position as a sports information intern at Division I Charleston Southern, Walden served as the primary media relations contact for the Buccaneers baseball and golf teams, and he also served as a secondary contact for football and men’s basketball.  In addition to his sports information duties, he also took over as the play-by-play voice for all CSU men’s basketball radio broadcasts, and he created and hosted the “Buccaneer Update,” a weekly coaches show on the school’s athletics website.

"I am thrilled about the opportunity to continue my career at UWF," Walden said. "The athletic department here is one of the finest in the NCAA Division II ranks, and I hope that my contributions can be a benefit to Argonaut coaches and student-athletes as they continue their quest for national championships."

Prior to his year at Charleston Southern, Walden served as an interim sports information director at Brevard College during the school’s first season as an official Division II institution in the South Atlantic Conference.  At Brevard he produced and hosted all radio broadcasts for football, basketball and baseball as well as leading the department’s media relations efforts.

Walden worked all four years as a student assistant in the sports information office at Newberry, also a member of the SAC, where he helped track statistics, write press releases, and coordinate interviews with players and media.  During his time at Newberry, Walden also interned with WHNS Fox Carolina, freelanced as a sports writer for the Newberry Observer, and worked as a producer, writer and host for Newberry College Television.
