Argonaut Weekly - Week 7 Recap

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The fall teams at the University of West Florida are in the stretch run and have their eyes on the postseason.  The No. 19 UWF women’s soccer team went 3-0 on the week, and volleyball picked up three wins in four matches against strong regional opponents.  The UWF men’s soccer team finished its Gulf South Conference schedule undefeated and head coach Bill Elliott won his 200th career men’s soccer game.  Finally, the UWF cross country teams competed against some of the nation’s best in Arkansas.

ARGONAUTS OF THE WEEK

Katie Johnson
Volleyball
Senior Outside Hitter

Katie Johnson (Tallahassee, Fla./Loyola-Chicago) led UWF in kills last week, with 67 in four matches, as UWF was 3-1 against four likely NCAA Regional teams. She also scored three double-doubles thanks to her fine all-around play. Against Florida Southern on Saturday, Johnson had the set-clinching kill in all three sets, and against Tampa, she was just one kill away from a career-high despite the match lasting only four sets.

Monica Malavassi
Women’s Soccer
Sophomore Midfielder

Monica Malavassi (San Jose, Costa Rica/Methodist HS) had a career week for the Argonauts, scoring five goals with two assists in the team’s three wins.  In Tuesday’s 7-1 win at Montevallo, the sophomore assisted on the game’s first goal and added two goals of her own in the second half.  The sophomore notched her second straight multi-goal game against Alabama-Huntsville on Friday, as she scored both of the team’s goals in a 2-0 win.  Finally on Sunday versus Delta State, Malavassi assisted on the game’s first goal and then scored the team’s second goal in an 8-0 rout.  Malavassi ranks third on the team with eight goals and 20 points, and she also has four assists.
