PENSACOLA, Fla. – A three game sweep of then-No. 2 Florida Southern by the West Florida baseball team, which is now the No. 2 team in the nation, highlighted a busy week in UWF Athletics, as six different teams were in action. The No. 5 women’s tennis team recorded its first GSC victory of the season with a 7-2 win at Valdosta State. The UWF men’s and women’s basketball teams wrapped up their seasons, both going 1-1 for the week.

Junior Ben Hawkins (Rome, Ga./Wallace State CC-Hanceville) earned his first Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week award this week after a complete game four hit shutout performance Saturday against then-No. 2 Florida Southern. Hawkins tossed a gem against the Mocs striking out a career high 10 and allowing no walks, leading the Argonauts to a 3-0 win. Hawkins improved to 4-0 on the season as he guided West Florida to a series sweep over Florida Southern to improve the team to 13-1.

Men’s Tennis
Junior Jose Carlos Tolentino (Lima, Peru/Laredo CC) recorded two singles victories and three doubles victories this past weekend as UWF faced the top three teams in the country. On Friday, Tolentino defeated No. 21 Daniel Regan of No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic, 7-6, 7-4 at the No. 4 singles position. On Saturday, UWF faced No. 1- ranked Barry in a neutral site match in Valdosta, Ga. Tolentino recorded a 6-3, 6-4 singles victory over Quentin Vachez at the No. 3 position. Tolentino has an overall record of 6-2 in singles for the spring season.

Tolentino teamed with Domenico Sano (Macaray, Venezuela) in doubles, and the tandem went 3-0 over the weekend. On Friday, they defeated Eudaldo Bonet and Daniel Regan of No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic, 9-8, at the No. 2 doubles position. Bonet and Regan are the No. 8 doubles duo in the nation. On Saturday, against No. 1-ranked Berry, Sano and Tolentino defeated Macro Mokrzycki and Quentin Vachez 9-7 at the No. 2 doubles line. On Sunday, in UWF’s 7-2 loss to No. 2 Valdosta State, Tolentino and Sano upset the No. 3- ranked doubles duo in the nation, handing Philip Pakebusch and Luis Loeffler an 8-5 loss. For the spring season, Tolentino and Sano are 7-2 overall.
