PENSACOLA, Fla. – Women’s soccer star Shakira Duncan will highlight the list of University of West Florida student-athletes to be honored at the 2011 COX Pensacola Sports Association (PSA) Annual Awards Banquet on Tuesday, March 29.  The event will start at 6 p.m. at New World Landing in Pensacola, and tickets are available for $30 for PSA members and $40 for non-members.

Duncan will be named the PSA Amateur Athlete of the Year, marking the first time that an athlete has won the award in two straight seasons.  It will mark the third straight year a UWF women’s soccer player has won the award, following Shaneka Gordon in 2009.  Duncan, a Jamaican forward, was a two-time National Player of the Year for the Argonauts in 2009 and 2010, and she was the NCAA Division II national scoring champion both years as well.

Six UWF student-athletes will be honored with Special Achievement awards by the PSA, including first team All-Americans Caitlyn Baines (women’s tennis), Taylor Brewster (women’s tennis), Kevin Ducros (men’s tennis), Leandro Ferreira (men’s tennis), Barbara Oliveira (women’s tennis) and Jodi-Ann Robinson (women’s soccer).

The headliners at this year’s banquet will include NFL Super Bowl champion Josh Sitton and NASCAR phenom Johanna Long, the co-winners of the Professional Athlete of the Year award.  Awards will also be handed out for Special Olympic Athlete of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Sportsman of the Year.  Finally, three individuals will be inducted into the PSA Hall of Fame: Bill Hamilton (Pensacola State Athletic Director), Buck Showalter (Baltimore Orioles Manager) and Calvin Washington (Par 4 Charities).  The guest speaker will be former MLB player and manager Art Howe.

Reservations are required, and tickets will be available through Monday, March 21.  Corporate tables are available as well.  Call the PSA at (850) 434-2800 or visit for more information.
