Hawkins Earns National Honor, UWF Baseball Remains No. 1
Junior Named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida baseball team (34-4, 10-1 Gulf South Conference) remained ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and College Baseball Lineup national polls announced on Monday, and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper also named junior left-hander Ben Hawkins (Rome, Ga./Wallace State CC-Hanceville) one of this week’s Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week.
The Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week awards are announced each Monday and feature players from across all NCAA divisions. Hawkins is the second Argonaut to win the award; Kevin Johnson was a two-time Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, winning the award in 2009 and 2010. Hawkins’ honor also marks the 10th time a GSC player has won the award.
The junior pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in UWF’s second game against West Alabama on Saturday, allowing just four batters to reach base, two by walk and two by hit-by-pitch. Hawkins also struck out a career high 12 batters, the most for an Argonaut pitcher this year. Hawkins is now 9-0 this season with a team-best 0.86 ERA, and he has 67 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 52.1 innings pitched.
In the CBN national poll, the top four stayed the same, as UWF was followed by No. 2 Central Missouri (27-5), No. 3 Mount Olive (30-6) and No. 4 Grand Valley State (23-3). In the College Baseball Lineup, the Argonauts and Central Missouri held their spots at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
The Argonauts will put their 20-game winning streak on the line with four games this week, first facing NAIA opponent Mobile at home on Tuesday, April 12 at 5 p.m. UWF will then face GSC East rival Alabama-Huntsville on the road this week to continue conference play.
