Argonaut Weekly - Week 33 Recap

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 2011 regular season officially came to a close last week, with the No. 1 UWF baseball team taking two of three games from West Alabama over the weekend. Meanwhile, NCAA Regional play kicked into high gear for the Argonaut tennis teams, with the women’s squad taking down Florida Southern on Sunday to advance to the 2nd round. Men’s tennis and men’s golf both open NCAA Regional competition on Monday.

Elsewhere, the UWF softball and women’s golf teams saw their seasons come to a close this week. The softball squad was eliminated from GSC Tournament contention on Sunday night, while the women’s golf team did not receive an NCAA Regional bid.

Shane Waller
Senior Closer

Senior reliever Shane Waller (Bryceville, Fla./Northwest Florida State) saved two more games for the No. 1 UWF baseball team over the weekend, giving him a GSC-best 10 saves this year.  The right-hander has been the Argonauts' ace out of the bullpen, appearing in 17 games with a 0.89 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 20.1 innings pitched.

Naomi Higa
Women’s Tennis

Junior Naomi Higa (Córdoba, Argentina/Inmaculado Corazon de Maria Adoratrices) stepped up at the best possible time in UWF's 5-2 win over No. 11 Florida Southern in NCAA Regional Play on Sunday. Along with Yana Bokareva, Higa scored an 8-5 win over FSC's Crystal Copel and Pamela Paradis in No. 3 doubles. But it was her contribution in No. 6 singles that saved the Argonauts on Sunday. With UWF trailing heavily in two of the three matches left on court, Higa rallied for a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win over Paradis to score the clinching point and send the Argos on to the next round.
