Argonauts Land 11 on GSC Fall All-Academic Team

UWF Leads GSC with 46 on All-Academic Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Florida landed 11 players on the Gulf South Conference Fall All-Academic Team, it was announced by the GSC on Tuesday. UWF also placed 46 players, a conference high, on the All-Academic Honor Roll.

Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the GSC Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities.

The UWF women’s cross country team was represented on the Fall All-Academic team by sophomores Ruth Ashley (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and Renea Porsch (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Land O' Lakes HS). Ashley posted a 3.68 GPA in Mathematics while Porsch, a 2011 GSC second team selection, was a unanimous decision recording a 3.52 GPA in Environmental Science.

Three players represented the UWF men’s soccer team on the Fall All-Academic team in Matthew Aldred (Eastbourne, England/Loughborough (St. Bede's Senior School), Will Henderson (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) and Trey Kramer (New Orleans, La./Jesuit HS). Aldred was a 2011 All-GSC First Team selection and finds his way on the Fall All-Academic team by posting a 3.96 GPA as a graduate in Exercise Science. Henderson posted a 3.58 GPA in Exercise Science while Kramer accumulated a 3.71 GPA in Environmental Science.

The UWF women’s soccer team landed four players on the Fall All-Academic team in Lauren Byrd (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS), Monica Malavassi (San Jose, Costa Rica/Methodist HS), Daniele Cruz Mejia (San Jose, Costa Rica/University of Costa Rica) and Jordan Stone (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS). Byrd was a 2011 All-GSC second team selection and posted a 3.38 GPA in Engineering Physics. For the second consecutive year Malavassi finds her way onto the Fall All-Academic team, this time as a unanimous selection. She was also named to the All-GSC First Team this season and posted a 3.65 GPA in Elementary Education. Cruz Mejia was also an All-GSC First Team selection this season and posted a 3.54 GPA. Senior Stone, an All-GSC First Team selection this season, was a unanimous selection to the Fall All-Academic team posting a 3.49 GPA in Criminal Justice.

Two players represented the UWF volleyball team on the Fall All-Academic team in Molly Pearce (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon County HS) and Anna Stoecklein (St. Charles, Mo./Missouri (Incarnate Word Academy).  Pierce, an All-GSC First Team Selection this season, was the lone volleyball unanimous decision for the conference accumulating a 3.90 in Legal Studies. Stoecklein was also an All-GSC First Team selection this season and finds herself on the Fall All-Academic team for posting a 3.33 GPA in nursing.
