No. 7 West Florida Jumps Three Spots on Second Day of NCAA Regional

CONOVER, N.C. – The No. 7 West Florida men’s golf team improved its team score by five strokes and jumped three spots in Tuesday’s second round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional hosted by Lenior-Rhyne.  The Argos (298-293 - 591) finished the second round 15-over par for the tournament and tied for 10th, 11 strokes behind new leader No. 16 Georgia College (291-289 - 580).

Senior Carlos Rodriguez (Cali, Colombia/Austin Peay) posted the team’s top score in Tuesday’s second round, carding 71.  Rodriguez (74-71 - 145) had a consistent round, tallying 15 pars with two birdies and one bogey.  The senior is tied for 17th individually at 1-over par for the tournament.

After his 71 in Monday’s first round, freshman Adam Whipp (Sydney, Australia/Pittwater HS) posted a 76 on Tuesday to fall from 10th to 27th.  Whipp (71-76 - 147) is now 3-over par.  The rest of the Argonaut lineup posted 74s on Tuesday.  Ryan Black (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) is tied for 39th at 5-over (75-74 - 149), while Thomas Guste-Pedersen (Helle, Norway/Frank Phillips) is 8-over (78-74 - 152) and Juan Miguel Heredia (Cuenca, Ecuador/Jacksonville State) is 9-over (79-74 - 153).

Georgia College took over the team lead after finishing the first day tied for fourth, moving ahead of round one leader Florida Tech (286-295 - 581).  A trio of teams are tied for third, including No. 1 Barry (295-289 - 584), No. 8 UNC Pembroke (296-288 - 584) and No. 13 USC Aiken (294-290 - 584).

Jeff Evanier of Eckerd fired the second 68 of the tournament on Tuesday to take over the individual lead at 6-under par (70-68 - 138), passing round one leader J.P. Griffin (68-72 - 140) of No. 19 Georgia Southwestern.  Griffin is tied with Matt Atkins (70-70 - 140) of USC Aiken for second place.

The third and final round will tee off on Wednesday morning at Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C., and the Argos will look to earn their ninth trip to the NCAA Championships.  Five teams and two individuals on non-advancing teams will advance to the national tournament on May 15-19 in Louisville, Ky.
