UWF earns experience at California meet

Freshman duo makes statement in their first collegiate race at the USF Invite

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of West Florida women’s cross country team finished 14th out of 19 teams at the USF Cross Country Invitational at Golden Gate Park to start the 2012 season. The 2011 GSC Freshman of the Year Kelley Bahn picked up right where she left off from her freshman campaign, crossing the finish line first for the Argos with a 56th overall finish (19:35).

Junior Renea Porsch finished second for UWF placing 68th overall (19:52), while senior Sabrina Seignemartin finished third for the Argos in 78th place (20:04) with a personal-best time on a 5,000-meter course.

“Kelley and Renea picked right up from last year running consistently strong,” head coach John Bergen said. “Sabrina set a personal best today and finished as out third runner, so I am very pleased with the performances from our returners.”

Rounding out the top-five finishers for UWF were a duo of freshman runners that made their presence known immediately for the Argonauts. Freshman Chelsea Humbert finished 80th overall (20:06) and fourth for the Argos while fellow freshman Virna Trinidad finished 90th overall (20:15) and was the fifth Argo across the finish line for UWF.

“Our freshman had a nice start to their college careers,” Bergen said. “Chelsea and Virna were top-five finishers and Jessica (Gillard) was not far behind them.”

West Florida entered the season ranked third in the south region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The team will look to improve next weekend at the Fleet Feet Invitational on Sept. 8, 2012 in Huntsville, Ala.
