Argonauts drop two matches on final day of Hemingway Invitational
Sierra Hansen notches double-doubles in each contest

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida volleyball team faced two more nationally ranked opponents on the last of its Hemingway Island Grill Invitational Saturday, and put up a strong fight in both but were unable to come out on top. The Argonauts (1-3) stole a set from No. 10 Indianapolis before losing 3-1 and fell to No. 2 Tampa 3-0.
No. 10 Indianapolis def. West Florida 16-26, 20-25, 25-18, 18-25
Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) was one kill shy of tying her career record mark after smashing an Argonaut-best 20 at a .341 rate. Her 11 digs gave her a double-double along with Haley Shackelford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Yavapai), who collected 11 kills and 10 digs. Sierra Hansen (Layton, Utah/Southern Idaho) also hit double figures in two different categories with 32 assists and 11 digs.
UWF suffered its largest deficit of the match in the first set when it fell behind on a 7-1 run by Indianapolis (3-1) and never recovered in the 25-16 loss. The second frame saw a more competitive Argonaut squad that tied the score on seven occasions, but a late charge by the Greyhounds decided the set in their favor 25-20.
A fired up West Florida took the court and dominated the third set when it found its rhythm. Hansen was at the service line seven consecutive times during a six point spree during which Duyn connected on three straight kills, who amassed 10 in that set alone. Indianapolis could not come up with an answer for the pair in the 25-18 UWF victory, but did respond effectively in the fourth set by controlling the lead from the beginning to end the match with an identical 25-18 result.
No. 2 Tampa def. West Florida 20-25, 23-25, 22-25
Hansen had a strong all-around performance of 26 assists and 11 digs to pick up her second double-double of the day, which she secured even before the start of the third set. Duyn led the offense with nine kills and Colleen Starrs (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) the defense with 12 digs.
Each set saw a similar pattern of both teams coming back to tie up the score on multiple occasions despite the margin of deficit. UWF fell back by five points but tied up the first set 18-18 before a 7-2 run by Tampa (3-1) handed them a 25-20 loss. The opposite was true in the second and third sets as the Argonauts grabbed an early lead and clung hard, but the Spartans stayed with it both times and edged them at the end of each frame 25-23 and 25-22, respectively.
West Florida continues its challenging schedule next weekend at one of the top tournaments of college volleyball, the Colorado Premier Challenge, where it will face No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul Friday at 1 p.m. CT and No. 18 Lewis at 4:30 p.m. CT. The Argonauts’ other opponents will be determined following the results of the first two matches. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
