PENSACOLA, Fla. – After falling behind 1-0 early in the first half, the West Florida women’s soccer team battled back to defeat visiting No. 16 Rollins 2-1 at Brosnaham Park Friday night. Freshman Shanice Monteith (George Town, Cayman Islands) scored the game-winner for UWF in the 85th minute. With the win, the Argonauts improved to 3-0 on the season, while Rollins fell to 1-2.
Rollins had more offensive opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Argos 9-5 through the first 45 minutes. The Tars also had five corner kicks in the first half compared to none for the Argos.
With that momentum carrying through to the second half, Rollins took the lead in the 48th minute when Courtney Reddig scored on a free kick inside the left post.
The Argos were able to tie the score thanks to an unusual goal in the 65th minute. Rachel Cutts (Pace, Fla.) launched a free kick into the penalty area from 40 yards out, sailing the ball all the way to Rollins goalkeeper Mary Spring. Spring caught the ball, but she had backed over the end line into the goal, resulting in a UWF score.
The score remained 1-1 until the 85th minute when Monteith and Sashana Campbell (Manchester, Jamaica) worked for a beautiful combination, leaving Monteith open for a lofting goal over Spring’s outstretched arms.
The Argonauts will return to action on Sunday, Sept, 9 against Florida Southern at 12:30 p.m. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
