UWF men's cross country cruises to second place finish
Sophomore Cody Haden continues to shine; freshman A.J. Cunningham sets personal-best time

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team had solid performances at the UAH Fleet Feet Invitational on a rainy Saturday morning in Huntsville, Ala. The Argonauts finished runner-up to Gulf South Conference opponent and host school Alabama-Huntsville. UWF and UAH accounted for seven of the top-10 finishers at the meet.
Sophomore Cody Haden continued his solid career as an Argonaut, leading the way for UWF with a fifth-place overall finish (26:37.90). Haden has been one of the top two finishers in back-to-back 8,000-meter races to start the season.
“This was a great early-season race for us to see where we stand running up against the top-ranked team in our region (UAH),” head coach John Bergen said. “This early in the year we were very pleased with our performance.”
Reining GSC Men’s Runner of the Week Martinique Sykes crossed the finish line second for the Argonauts (26:54.20) and finished sixth overall. Sophomore Chris Roach finished third for the Argos (27:11.60), and 10th overall.
Freshman A.J. Cunningham had an outstanding performance in Huntsville, as he bettered his previous collegiate 8,000-meter time by 78 seconds. The Tarzana, Calif. native finished fourth for UWF, and missed a top-10 finish by four tenths of a second.
“I am very pleased with A.J.’s race performance; he learned from his first college race last weekend and ran a really smart race this weekend,” Bergen said. “It is really great to see that he and several of the other freshmen are making an impact on our scoring team.
Freshman Taylor Hickey’s 18th-place finish rounded out the top-five finishers for the Argos, as the first-year runner crossed the finish line with a time of 27:37.90.
The Argonauts will head to Moblie, Ala. next weekend for the USA Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
