West Florida drops two on final day of Colorado Premier Challenge
Autumn Duyn sets school record in digs, Sierra Hansen enters record book in assists

DENVER – After avoiding going to five sets for the start of the young season, the West Florida volleyball team dropped two heartbreaking five set thriller against No. 14 West Texas A&M and tournament co-host Regis on the final day of the Colorado Premier Challenge Saturday in Denver, Colo.
Despite the losses, the Argonauts still finished fourth overall in the 12 team tournament which featured nine programs ranked in the top-25 of the nation.
Two Argonauts also had a record evening in the nightcap against Regis, highlighted by Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) who set a school and personal record for digs in a single match with 37, which eclipsed Anna Stoecklein’s previous mark of 30. Sierra Hansen (Layton, Utah/Southern Idaho) also set a career plateau for herself of 59 assists, which puts her into the West Florida record books tied for seventh for the most assists in a single match.
No. 14 West Texas A&M def. West Florida 30-32, 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 10-15
Haley Shackelford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Yavapai) matched her career-high in kills for the second time in just over a week as she had a match-leading 21 to lead the UWF offense. Sarah Scott (Plainfield, Ill./Texas-San Antonio) contributed 15 kills and stuffed a career-best 13 blocks for a double-double. Duyn also collected a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
The first frame was the longest and most combative set of the match, which saw an astounding 24 ties and seven lead changes on the way to a 32-20 result in favor of West Texas A&M. West Florida had three straight set points that the Lady Buffs kept warding off until back-to-back kills by them ended the extended set.
The Argonauts took the next two sets with identical 25-23 results. Four straight errors allowed West Florida to grab a 12-8 advantage, and took as large as a six point lead in the second set. A tight game ensued in the third until the Argonauts’ late five point streak gave them a comfortable cushion to close out the set.
West Florida’s offense took a turn for the worse in the final two frames when multiple attack errors plagued it. After falling back early in the fourth set, UWF fought to within two points at the 20-18 mark but couldn’t close out to lose 25-19. The deciding set featured some of the most cutthroat play of the match with both teams going all-out, but the Lady Buffs took a five-point run after being tied 10-10 to claim the victory.
Regis def. UWF 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 25-27, 9-15
In addition to Duyn’s school record and Hansen’s record book-worthy assist total, they also had double-doubles with 13 digs and 11 kills, respectively. Shackelford also had a double-double (13 kills, 13 digs) and Jenny Bellairs (Osage, Iowa/Southeast Missouri State) broke her career mark of kills with 20, which surpassed her previous total of 19 against Florida Southern last year.
The Argonauts and Riders (5-4) went point-for-point for the majority of the first set until a kill by Scott ended the frame 25-23. UWF handily dispatched of Regis in the next set by going on a 10-3 spree which included kills by Homme, Bellairs and Scott to put them completely out of reach for a 25-16 victory.
The tide turned in the following two sets, as Regis hung tough and tied the third game late 21-21 before a 4-1 run snatched what appeared to be a match win from West Florida 25-22. The roles swapped slightly in the fourth set, the Argonauts trailing slightly midway through as they clawed their way back into two set points that they couldn’t capitalize on to fall 27-25 and force a fifth set. The two squads went point-for-point in the final frame, but a six point run put Regis firmly in control and they came back to take the match with a 15-9 win.
The Argonauts return to familiar territory at the UWF Field House next weekend to open Gulf South Conference play with a three match homestand against West Georgia Friday at 6 p.m. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
