West Florida finishes third at Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.Camila Sevillano started the season with a bang by placing solo second at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate and paced the West Florida golf team to a third place finish in its first tournament of the season Tuesday.

Sevillano (Cali, Colombia/La Arboleda) equaled her runner-up finish from last year’s Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate by shooting a final round 74 on the par 70, 5,811 yard  The Sevierville-Highlands course. She totaled 146 to end just two strokes back of individual medalist Kimesha Anthony (68-76-144) of Columbus State.

The Argonauts improved their score by one shot to move up a spot overall, shooting 308 for a 36-hole total of 617. Newberry took the team title with a tournament-low 302 for a combined 606 to finish two strokes ahead of second place California University-Pennsylvania. Lincoln-Memorial (312-310-622) and Columbus State (306-316-622) completed the top-five.

West Florida led the field in par-4 scoring by averaging a score of 4.41, as well as birdies after collecting 14. Sevillano also topped the field individually in par-4 scoring and birdies, ending one under on par-4s by using a field-best six birdies.

With a final round 80, Elin Olsson (Mantorp, Sweden/Bildningscentrum Facetten) had a solid first collegiate finish by tying for 14th with 155 total. Fellow freshmen Luisa Villar Uquiza (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Mary of the Hills School) and Daisy-May Kenny (Purley, England/Woodcote HS) ended two and four strokes behind her, respectively, after identical rounds of 77 to tie for 21st and 31st. Agustina Cocha (Salta, Argentina/Colegio Santa Maria) wrapped up the tournament tied for 58th with an 86.

The Argonauts will face some of the top teams in the nation next week when they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the NCAA Women’s Division II Fall Preview Sept. 16. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
