PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men’s basketball team has finalized its 2012-13 schedule, it was announced by head coach Bob Stinnett.  The Argonauts will return after posting one of the team’s top seasons in school history last year, and the season will start at home with the UWF Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 9-11.

The season’s opening month will feature two home tournaments for the Argonauts.  Georgia College and State and Palm Beach Atlantic will come to Pensacola for the UWF Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 9-11.  The UWF Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 23-24 will feature Alabama-Huntsville, Albany State and Tuskegee.

The Argos will open up Gulf South Conference play on the road at North Alabama on Nov. 29.  Two days later the team will travel to Jackson, Tenn. to face Union University (Tenn.) for the first time as a GSC opponent.  Union and fellow conference newcomer Shorter will play a full league schedule in 2012-13, but they will not be eligible for postseason play in their second year of transition to NCAA Division II.

After the first weekend of conference play the team will face last year’s national runner-up Montevallo in non-conference action on the road on Dec. 8.  Montevallo fell in the 2011-12 national title game to Western Washington by a score of 72-65.  Non-conference play will continue for the team at the Las Vegas Classic on Dec. 18-19, when the Argonauts face St. Mary’s (Texas) and Central Washington.

Conference action will be back in full swing after the semester break, as the Argos will play host to their first home conference games against Shorter and Alabama-Huntsville on Jan. 3 and 5, respectively.  The Argos were eliminated from the GSC Tournament by UAH in the semifinals last year, and the Jan. 5 date will be their first chance to face the Chargers since that game.  UAH went on to win the conference and regional tournaments and advance to the Division II Elite Eight for the second straight year.

Conference play will continue through January and February, with home games scheduled for Jan. 19 (Valdosta State), 24 (Delta State), 26 (Christian Brothers) and 31 (North Alabama) and Feb. 2 (Union), 14 (West Alabama) and 16 (West Georgia.  The Feb. 16 game against West Georgia will mark the final home game of the regular season, but the team will close out the schedule with two more weeks of action on the road.

The Argos finished last year 19-11 overall and came close to their first ever berth to the NCAA Tournament.  UWF will look to take the next step in 2012-13, and their quest will begin at home against Palm Beach Atlantic on Nov. 9.  For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
