West Florida ties Union in GSC opener

Argos battle Bulldogs to 1-1 tie in double overtime in Union's first GSC event

JACKSON, Tenn. – After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the West Florida men’s soccer team left Jackson, Tenn. with a 1-1 tie in the Gulf South Conference opener against Union (Tenn.) (1-1-2, 0-0-1 GSC) Friday night.

The Argonauts (1-2-1, 0-0-1) were held scoreless until the 80th minute but played promising defense to hold the Bulldogs to one goal in 110 minutes of play.

With the Argos trailing 1-0 with 10 minutes left in regulation, Stephen Munoz (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) was able to capitalize on a free kick opportunity from 20 yards away to tie the score at 1-1 at the 80:03 mark. Munoz shot the ball from just outside the right wing of the Bulldogs’ box, over the heads of three defenders and past a diving keeper into the back corner of the net for the score.

Two-time defending GSC Defender of the Week Ramon Sealy (Bodden Town, Cayman Islands/John Gray HS) allowed one goal when Union’s Alysson Mohl took advantage of a similar opportunity earlier in the game. Mohl shot a free kick over the heads of two Argos and into the back corner of the net for Union’s first goal in a GSC event.

Sealy then held the Bulldogs’ lead to one after blocking a penalty kick to the right side at the 70:21 mark with a diving grab to keep the Argos’ hopes alive. The senior finished with 9 saves after Union took 15 shots in the game.

The Argos took 22 shots in the game, with 7 shots on goal. Dillon Gallet (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS)  led UWF with 5 shots.

UWF will play Christian Brothers at home against Christian Brothers on Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the UWF soccer fields.
