No. 24 West Florida sweeps Shorter 3-0
Autumn Duyn earns sixth double-double of the season
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Lindsay Homme smashed a match-high 15 kills in just three sets to lead the No. 24 West Florida volleyball team to its second sweep in two days after defeating Gulf South Conference opponent Shorter 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the UWF Fieldhouse.
Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) also collected double-figure kills with 10 in addition to 16 digs for her team-leading sixth of the season. K.C. Dobbins (Winston-Salem, N.C./Arkansas) and Sierra Hansen (Layton, Utah/Southern Idaho) split setting duties for 20 and 18 assists, respectively.
West Florida started hot with three consecutive kills by Sarah Scott (Plainfield, Ill./Texas-San Antonio), Haley Shackelford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Yavapai) and Duyn and jumped out to a 15-9 lead midway through the first set. Shorter worked its way back within two points 20-18 but didn’t score again as Homme (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS), who hit .464 for the match, had three kills on the way to a 25-18 win in set one.
Strings of four and five points gave the Argonauts a big advantage during the second frame in which the Lady Hawks were unable to score more than two consecutive points, and UWF handily won 25-15. Shorter hung tough in the final set despite West Florida holding a 22-13 lead and managed to ward off match point twice before an attack error sealed the contest 25-18.
Jordan Corder had 26 assists and 16 digs for a double-double. Two Lady Hawks had eight kills apiece, Jasmine Crook and Leslie Welch, to lead Shorter’s offense. Tanequa Whitman led the defense with 22 digs.
