PENSACOLA, Fla. – Felipe Oliveira checked back into the game late in the second half and verified head coach Bill Elliot’s confidence in the freshman by scoring the game winner in the 87th minute. With the win the University of West Florida Argonauts (2-2-1, 1-0-1 GSC) earn their first Gulf South Conference victory of the season.
Oliveira made an overlapping run deep into the attacking third and crossed the ball into the box. After senior Frank Cope had his shot deflected, Oliveira was there to put the ball in the back of the net to seal the game late in the second half.
An aggressive back and forth game was expected, as the last time these two teams met was in the 2011 GSC Tournament Championship where the Buccaneers won in a shootout 5-4.
Reigning GSC Defender of the Week Ramon Sealy left the game early in the third minute after colliding with a Buccaneer striker. Senior Steven Hermosa came in for the remainder of the match and controlled the 18-yard box for the remainder of the game. While Hermosa recorded three saves on the game, the senior from Orlando, Fla. had several punch outs and held his ground against the CBU offense to earn the shutout.
The University of West Florida men’s soccer team will be back in action this Sunday, Sept. 23 at the UWF soccer complex at 12:30 p.m. against GSC opponent Delta State. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
