PENSACOLA, Fla.– The West Florida women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to 11 games and its unbeaten streak to 14 games with a 3-0 win over West Alabama Friday night.
The Argonauts picked up their fourth shutout of the season and defending Gulf South Conference Player of the Week Chelsea Palmer (Plano, Texas/Tyler JC) scored two goals to move into tied-for-first on the team with eight on the season.
UWA came into the match ranked No. 2 in the GSC standings, although Friday’s match was not a GSC event and will not be reflected in the conference records.
After a back-and-forth battle for the first 60 minutes of the game, UWF gained momentum late in the second half. Kelly Andres (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny HS) sent a quick volley from the right side to Palmer who shot into the back of the net to put UWF up 1-0 with 65:21 on the clock.
Just two minutes later, Monica Malavassi (San Jose, Costa Rica/University of Costa Rica) played a through ball on a corner kick from Shelby Bush (Shalimar, Fla./Darton) to Palmer who scored her second goal of the game and eighth of the season.
UWF dominated the rest of the game, and with less than 10 seconds on the clock Alisa Festagallo (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) sent a corner to Jessica Ebanks (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands/University College) who sent a header into net for her first goal of the season with 8.1 seconds on the clock.
Sarah Story (Hoover, Ala./Darton) recorded four saves and her fourth shutout of the season. UWF outshot UWA 16-8 on the day.
The Argos will play No. 7 Armstrong Monday at 4 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex.
