BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite a third place finish in the conference standings last year, the West Florida men’s basketball team was picked to finish eighth in the Gulf South Conference preseason coaches’ poll released on Thursday.  Defending league champion Alabama-Huntsville earned the top pick in the preseason poll for the third straight year.

The Argonauts are coming off a season in which they finished 19-11, and they went 8-6 in GSC play.  UWF nearly upset top seed Alabama-Huntsville in the GSC Tournament semifinals, falling 87-84 on a last second three-pointer.  The Argos had two All-South Region picks in Jamar Moore and Marquis Mathis, and both players are currently competing professionally in Europe.

UAH earned the top spot in this year’s poll with seven first place votes and 49 total points, while Christian Brothers was picked to finish second (36).  West Georgia (30) and West Alabama (29) landed the third and fourth spots, respectively, and West Alabama did so while receiving one first place vote.

The GSC also announced its list of top newcomers, and Argonauts Tracy Williams (Cocoa, Fla./Clayton State) and Ellis Young III (Merritt Island, Fla./Brevard CC), were UWF’s representatives.  Williams, a 6-0 point guard, returns to college basketball this year after last playing for Clayton State in 2007-08.  The veteran led the Lakers to a Peach Belt Conference championship and earned PBC Tournament MVP honors.

Young, a 6-4 junior college transfer, was a two-time all-conference pick for Brevard Community College.  He averaged over 10 points and five rebounds per game in both seasons, and he also shot over 50 percent both years as well.  Young was also a first team all-state pick as a prep player for Cocoa High School.

The 2011-12 season will begin for the Argonauts with the UWF Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 9-11.  The Argos will face Palm Beach Atlantic on Nov. 9 at 4 p.m., and they will then host Georgia College and State on Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.  For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
