UWF picked to finish 8th in GSC preseason poll
Juniors Raquel Miller and Toynetta Jonson make GSC Top Newcomers List

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The West Florida women’s basketball team will look to exceed expectations after it was picked to finish eighth in the Gulf South Conference preseason coaches’ poll.
The Argos received four sixth-place votes and three seventh-place votes to finish two points behind Christian Brothers (13). Head coach Stephanie Yelton is starting her first season at UWF and has just two regular starters and five players who saw time off the bench returning to the 2012-2013 squad.
Alabama-Huntsville was picked to win the conference with five first-place votes and 47 points, defending GSC champion West Alabama was picked to finish second with 42 points.
The Argos will look to the veteran leadership of senior Hanna Vette (Tarkio, Mo./Mineral Area CC), who started 20 games last season, and junior Kelseigh Hughes (Hammond, La./St. Thomas Aquinas HS), who started 25 games last season, to continue an upward trend of success.
UWF won six conference games last season, the most since 2006-2007, while finishing 10-17 overall and 6-8 in the GSC. The winning percentage of .429 was also the highest in five years.
Toynetta Johnson (Pascagoula, Miss./Pearl River CC) and Raquel Miller (Jackson, Tenn./Southern Illinois) were named to the GSC’s Top Newcomers list.
Johnson led Pearl River with 142 assists and 56 steals while recording 90 rebounds. She made the MAJC All-Star Team and the NJCC All-Tournament Team in 2012.
Miller appeared in 26 games with seven starts for Division I Southern Illinois last season, with most of her starts coming near the end of Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Argos open up play against Southern Indiana at the UWF Tip-Off Classic at 2 p.m. on Nov. 9.
