CARROLLTON, Ga. – On the strength of an even and strong offensive effort, the No. 23 West Florida volleyball team handed Gulf South Conference opponent West Georgia its second 3-0 loss at the hands of the Argonauts this season to sweep the series against them Friday evening.
Senior Haley Shackelford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Yavapai) was just one of two players on the court to reach double-digit kills with 12 at a .333 clip while Lindsay Homme (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) and Jenny Bellairs (Osage, Iowa/Southeast Missouri State) hovered with nine kills each. Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) made the first start of her career as libero, digging up 28 balls while K.C. Dobbins (Winston-Salem, N.C./Arkansas) and Sierra Hansen (Layton, Utah/Southern Idaho) split for 16 assists. As a team, the Argonauts hit .336 for the match.
After trading points in the first set, West Florida benefitted from multiple attack errors and kills by three Argonauts to grab a sizeable 11-4 lead. West Georgia used a 5-2 run to come within four points 13-9, but a balanced 12-3 effort by UWF allowed them to breeze through the first set 25-12.
The Argonauts took an identical 11-4 lead in the second frame and used six straight points midway through for a commanding 20-7 advantage over the Wolves. UWF cruised to a 25-15 victory despite West Georgia’s 8-5 run in response to the Argonauts.
West Florida held steady during the final game and allowed West Georgia to score in succession only three times the entire set. Two final kills by Shackelford and Bach along with an attack error by the Wolves ended the match with UWF taking the set 25-15.
West Georgia’s Emily Reul had 10 kills, and Amanda Miller had 20 assists. Melissa Holt held down the defense with 19 digs.
