GAME NOTES: Volleyball heads to Red Elephant Cafe South Regional Crossover

No. 22 UWF to face four regional opponents

PENSACOLA, Fla. – This weekend the No. 22 West Florida volleyball team will break from Gulf South Conference action to play in the Red Elephant Café South Regional Crossover in Tampa, Fla., where it will face four regional opponents. The Argonauts take on Florida Southern and host No. 2 Tampa Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. ET, respectively, followed by Rollins at 1:15 p.m. ET and Eckerd at 5:45 p.m. ET Saturday.

UWF Sweeps GSC Player of the Week Awards
After leading West Florida to a 3-0 weekend and its season-best eighth consecutive win, Haley Shackelford and Autumn Duyn were named the GSC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Shackelford had an outstanding 4.89 kills per set at a .455 attack rate, while Duyn averaged 5.78 digs per set that included a 28 dig performance against West Georgia.

Argonauts No. 22 in the Nation
West Florida’s three sweeps over the weekend preserved their place in the top 25 of Monday’s AVCA Division II Coaches Poll for the sixth consecutive week. They moved up to No. 22 in the nation and remain the only Gulf South Conference member to appear in the poll this season.

Stunning Offensive Performance
The Argonauts had its most potent offensive outing of the season in its three sweeps against West Georgia, Shorter and Alabama-Huntsville. For the weekend UWF hit an impressive .350 as a team and averaged 15.6 kills per set, which is higher than the 15.3 average of the nation’s leader. Three of five Argonauts that had 10 or more kills hit at a .393 clip or higher.

Tops of the GSC...
After one of the strongest weekend performances of the season, West Florida made significant moves statistically in both the GSC and NCAA. The Argonauts rank in the top three of every category in the GSC, and hold first place in four statistical categories including hitting percentage (.238), assists (12.68), kills (13.61) and blocks (1.86).

...And Moving Up in the NCAA
Not only has West Florida improved statistically in the GSC, but it has made sizeable leaps nationally in a few categories. It moved up nearly 20 spots in both hitting percentage (35th) and win/loss percentage (63rd)  while moving up to 24th in assists per set and kills per set.

Scouting the Weekend
The Argonauts will pause GSC action for the weekend as it travels to the Red Elephant Cafe South Regional Crossover to face regional foes No. 2 Tampa, Florida Southern, Rollins and Eckerd.

West Florida kicks off action against Florida Southern and will look for revenge against the 14-7 squad who ended UWF’s season in the NCAA Regional Tournament last year. A rematch will take place in their final match Friday against host Tampa, who defeated the Argonauts 3-0 at the Hemingway’s Island Grill Invitational and are riding a 10 match win streak.

Play continues Saturday when they take on Rollins who is 11-9 on the year and have won three of their last four matches. The Tars lead UWF in the all-time series 3-1. The Argonauts wrap up the tournament against Eckerd, who has also won three of their last four matches and are 12-7 for the season.
