BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With multiple players out with injuries, many new faces have stepped up for West Florida men’s soccer head coach Bill Elliott to help the team remain unbeaten in Gulf South Conference play.  Two of those players were recognized by the GSC on Tuesday for their contributions last week.  Junior midfielder Jack Salafrio (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) was named GSC Player of the Week, and junior goalkeeper Steven Hermosa (Orlando, Fla./Valencia CC) earned GSC Defender of the Week honors.

For both Salafrio and Hermosa, the GSC weekly awards were the first in their careers.  Salafrio is the second Argonaut to be named player of the week this year, while Hermosa makes it six defender of the week awards this year for UWF, five of which have gone to goalkeeper Ramon Sealy (Bodden Town, Cayman Islands/John Gray HS).

Salafrio’s award comes after the junior tallied two assists in the Argos’ 2-1 win at Christian Brothers on Friday and a game-winning goal in double overtime at Delta State on Sunday.  Sunday’s goal came with just 47 seconds left in the second overtime period, sending the Argonauts home with their 10th win of the year.  Salafrio now has two goals and two assists in his junior year, having seen action in 12 games, seven of which he started.

Sealy has seen the most playing time in goal for UWF this year, but Hermosa has taken advantage of his opportunities.  On Monday in a shutout win at West Alabama, the junior tallied four saves to preserve the victory.  Hermosa then tallied four more saves in Friday’s win at Christian Brothers in the first 55 minutes before leaving the game with an injury.  The Orlando native leads the team with a 0.87 goals against average in six games, and he holds a .789 save percentage.

The Argos will complete the regular season with a pair of home games this weekend, facing Alabama-Huntsville on Friday, Oct. 26 and Shorter on Sunday, Oct. 28.  Sunday’s game will also mark senior day for the UWF men’s soccer team.  For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
