West Florida Knocks Off No. 2 Team in Nation
The highlight of the 3-1 weekend at the Red Elephant Cafe South Regional Crossover was West Florida’s 3-1 upset of tournament host Tampa, who was at the time the No. 2 team in the nation. The victory snapped the Spartans’ 35-match home win streak which dated back to 2010. This is not unfamiliar territory for the Argonauts, who also upset then-No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul on Sep. 7, and have now taken down two top two ranked teams in the nation this season.
Argonauts Keep Rising Nationally
Following their 3-1 performance at the Red Elephant Cafe South Regional Crossover, including an upset of then-No. 2 Tampa, West Florida jumped two spots in the national rankings. The Argonauts are No. 20 in the nation this week, marking the seventh straight week they’ve been ranked this season.
Pack it Pink
West Florida volleyball has been a huge supporter of breast cancer awareness over the years and will continue raising awareness this Saturday when it hosts its annual “Pack it Pink” event. The match against Union marks the sixth consecutive year the Argonauts will hold the event, and all proceeds will be donated to the Side-Out Foundation. The “Pack it Pink” match hits close to home for the West Florida family, as head coach Melissa Wolter is a breast cancer survivor after battling the disease during the 2006-07 season.
Facing Christian Brothers
The weekend’s biggest match comes early as the Argonauts look to avenge their only GSC loss of the season to Christian Brothers. The Buccaneers, who are second in the GSC standings, took down UWF in five sets on their turf which ended UWF’s 23 match win streak in GSC play dating back to 2010. Christian Brothers is 14-7, 7-2 GSC and went 2-2 at the Red Elephant Cafe South Regional Crossover this past weekend.
Facing Union
The conference newcomer is struggling through its first season of GSC play, sitting 4-19 overall with just one conference win and a 1-9 GSC record. Their lone conference win was over West Alabama, their first GSC match of the season, and are riding a nine match losing streak in conference action. West Florida took them down in three sets on Sep. 22.
Facing North Alabama
Longtime archrival North Alabama is currently third in the GSC standings with a 6-4 conference record and are 10-11 overall. The Lions have won seven of their last eight matches but are 2-4 on the road. The Argonauts went to five sets with their conference foe in Florence on Sep. 23 and came out on top.
