PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida men’s soccer team finished the regular season on Sunday at the UWF Soccer Complex with a 2-0 win over Shorter, extending the team’s unbeaten streak to 14 games. The Argonauts will head into the postseason with an overall record of 12-2-2 and an unbeaten Gulf South Conference mark of 10-0-2, and they will kick off the GSC Tournament on Friday, Nov. 2 in a semifinal match against Delta State.
UWF had a strong all-around performance in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Shorter (4-13-1, 3-9 GSC), outshooting the Hawks 22-3. Senior Stephen Munoz (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) put the Argos on top with his sixth goal of the season in the 23rd minute, and freshman Felipe Oliveira (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway HS) made it 2-0 in the 39th minute.
Munoz’s goal was assisted by Fernando Silveira (Brasilia, Brazil/Lincoln Memorial) and Dillon Gallet (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS). Silveira rolled a through ball to a Gallet in the right side of the penalty area, and Gallet drove the ball across the face of the goal. Munoz was waiting on the back post to score his 22nd career goal, tying him for 10th all-time in school history.
Oliveira made it 2-0 with a highlight reel goal at the 38:50 mark. The freshman sliced through a crowd of defenders into the penalty area, creating a one-on-one chance against Shorter goalkeeper Ryan Edwards. Oliveira chipped the ball over Edwards’ outstretch arms, scoring his team-leading eighth goal of the year.
Sophomore Stuart McCrory (Prattville, Ala./Prattville HS) picked up a win in his third straight start and his second straight shutout, making two saves along the way. Edwards and Austen Trevers shared time in goal for the Hawks, and each tallied three saves.
The Argos will face Delta State (7-10-1, 4-8 GSC) for the third time this season in the GSC semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2. at Ashton Brosnaham Park in Pensacola.
