PENSACOLA, Fla. - Playing for the third time in as many days, West Florida continued their strong play on Thursday. West Florida swept doubles and survived a pair of tiebreakers in singles to blank 20th ranked Georgia College and State University, 9-0, at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. West Florida (18-2) won their fifth straight, while Georgia College and State Univ. (13-5) dropped to 0-3 all-time against West Florida.
After a convincing sweep in doubles, West Florida was tested in two singles matches. Forty-fourth ranked Eduardo Cavasotti (Florianopolis, Brazil) lost the first set of his third position match to the Bobcats Rodrigo Yamauti. But Cavasotti thwarted the upset bid by winning the second set and the tiebreaker. Marco Matteucci (Queens, N.Y.) also lost the first set of his match in the sixth position, but he rebounded to win the match. West Florida won the other four singles matches in straight sets.
West Florida will put their five-match winning streak on the line Saturday against ninth-ranked St. Edward's. It will be the first of three consecutive matches against top 10 NCAA Division II opponents. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
