Argos dominate West Alabama in Yelton's 100th career victory

Yelton reaches 100 wins in her eighth year as head coach, third at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball team cruised to an 86-56 win over West Alabama at the UWF Field House on Saturday in Stephanie Lawrence Yelton's 100th career victory as a head coach. The Argonauts clinched second place in the Gulf South Conference with the win and now stand at 18-7 overall and 15-6 in GSC play. UWA fell to 10-15, 7-14 with the loss.

Yelton had 57 wins in five seasons as head coach at Charleston Southern before coming to UWF, and she now has 43 wins in her third year with the Argonauts.

"We celebrate each one of the wins because they don't come easy," said Yelton. "I'm happy that I was able to get the 100th win with this group of women here at the University of West Florida, with a community and university that supported me so well two years ago when we were having such a tough time personally and professionally. It's great to get that win here."

It was a team effort for UWF in the win, as four players scored in double digits and two had double-doubles. Senior Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn.) had a standout performance, totaling 15 points with eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla.) and Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind.) both posted double-doubles, as Wigfall had 19 points and 11 rebounds while Bobos added 13 points and 10 boards. Kyle Muhammad (Pensacola, Fla.) also scored in double digits with 13.

The Argos jumped out to their biggest halftime lead of the season at 45-22, and they finished with their largest margin of victory of 30 points. The team shot 46.7 percent from three-point territory and made a season-best seven threes during the game. The Argos also led in rebounds 44-27.

"We've been waiting on some things to click," said Yelton. "We feel like we've been right there and we haven't put those final pieces together. I feel like today those final pieces came together for us. Hopefully we can build on that going into next week and the tournament."

Saturday marked the final regular season home game for Brianna Williams, and she went out on a high note with a near double-double. Williams is averaging 10.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.7 steals per game in her senior season.

"Brianna has meant loads for us with her work ethic and her desire," said Yelton. "She does anything we ask her to do. She's playing out of position this year and doing great things. I can't commend her enough for her efforts and what she's done for our program."

The Argos have locked up the No. 2 seed in the GSC Tournament, and they will close out the regular season on the road at Valdosta State on Saturday, Feb. 28. UWF will then face the tournament's No. 7 seed, which is still to be determined, at the UWF Field House in the GSC Quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 3.
