ITA Oracle Cup Day 2 Recap
Live Scoring
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Through five matches at the ITA South Regional and two matches at the ITA Oracle Cup, the UWF tandem of
Alex Peyrot and
Pedro Dumont hadn't really been challenged for an entire match. But things changed on Friday night when Azusa Pacific's Pascal Engel and Oliver Frank went up a set and were holding serve late in the second set.
Â
That's when the Argonaut team broke through and took control of the match. After leading 6-5 in the second set, UWF broke APU's serve to even the match, 4-6, 7-5. They proceeded to ride that momentum to a 3-0 lead in the deciding third set en route to a 6-2 championship-clinching effort at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
Â
"The first couple of matches we were getting used to the altitude and seeing how the balls fly a little different," UWF head coach
Derrick Racine said. "We played a good first set (in the title match) but got broke. (In the second set) Everyone was holding serve and we got the big break to go up 7-5. We got the early break in the third to go up 2-0 and we broke the last game to win it again."
Â
The Argonauts went 3-0 in the Division 2 bracket to earn the ITA Oracle Cup Division 2 National Title. Peyrot and Dumont are 5-0 on the season and advance into the Oracle Cup Semifinals – affectionately known as the 'Super Bowl' portion of the event – where they will meet the NAIA champions from Georgia Gwinnett, Kevin Konfederak and Jordan Cox Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Central time. The Grizzlies' are the defending Super Bowl champions.
Â
The other semifinal features Emory, the Division 3 champion, and Seward Community College, the junior college champion. The winners will meet on Sunday for the right to advance to the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held November 3-6, 2016, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, New York.
