Complete GSC Preseason Poll & All-Conference Team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UWF women's basketball team received five first-place votes and was picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference preseason poll that was released by the league on Thursday. Additionally, senior
Toni Brewer was named to the five-member all-conference team.
UWF is coming off the most memorable season in program history, collecting school records with 28 overall victories and 18 conference wins. The Argonauts also won their first GSC regular-season title and the NCAA South Region Championship that earned them a berth in the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in school history.
Valdosta State was picked first with six first-place votes and 156 total points, just two ahead of UWF's 154. Lee garnered two first-place votes and 152 points, while Union had one first-place vote and 128 points. West Georgia was chosen fifth, followed by North Alabama, Delta State, Christian Brothers, Mississippi College, Alabama Huntsville, West Alabama, Shorter and league newcomers Montevallo and Auburn-Montgomery.
Head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton enters her sixth season in Pensacola and welcomes back three starters and seven additional letterwinners from a year ago. The Argonauts added a freshman and five junior or senior transfers.
Brewer was an Honorable Mention All-America selection as a junior when she averaged 13.7 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, while registering 19 double-doubles. The Huntsville, Alabama native enters her senior season with 1,149 points and 866 rebounds.
UWF will open its 2017-18 season Friday, Nov. 10 when it faces Albany State at the GSC-SIAC Challenge in Valdosta, Georgia.
