CONOVER, N.C. – The top-ranked UWF men's golf team played the final eight holes of the final round at the regional championship at 8-under-par en route to a tournament-best 11-under-par 273 to win the 2018 NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championship at Rock Barn Golf and Spa Wednesday.
UWF captured its second-consecutive regional title and fifth overall, breaking a tie with Florida Southern for the most in the South/Southeast region. The win was the Argonauts' seventh of the 2017-18 campaign and leaves this squad one shy of last year's record eight with one event remaining – the NCAA Championships.
A year ago, UWF posted the low round of the regional on the last day to maintain an 11-shot cushion on the Mocs, while Wednesday's winning margin was just three strokes. The teams were briefly tied at 6-under-par with most of their players having reached the back nine but the Argos took advantage down the stretch.
UWF shot a 12-under-par 840, just ahead of second-ranked FSC at 843. Barry was third at 853, followed by Lynn at 858, Lincoln Memorial at 868, and Delta State and Saint Leo tied for sixth at 876.
All four counters for the Argonauts played under-par, led by junior
Christian Bosso who played a bogey-free round with a 5-under-par 66. He birdied three of the last five holes and was one of just five players in the field of 108 to not have a bogey in the final round as he climbed 15 spots into a tie for fourth place.
Senior
Chandler Blanchet shot a 2-under-par 69 and ended the tournament in third place at 6-under-par 207. Junior
Jacob Huizinga posted a top-six finish for the second-straight year, using a 2-under-par 69 to finish tied for sixth at 4-under-par 210.
Senior
Henry Westmoreland IV was a big mover with a 14-spot jump following a 69 to end the event in a tie for 15t at 214. Junior
Bryce Geraghty tied for 87th with a 230 total following a 76.
UWF advances to the NCAA Championships, set for May 21-25 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals Fighting Joe Course in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The Argos will be paired with the West/South Central champion St. Mary's (Texas) and the Midwest/Central champion Indianapolis in the first two rounds.
