PENSACOLA, Fla. – University of West Florida softball head coach
Ashliegh McLean has named Emma Johansen as the team's assistant coach.
"I'm thankful for the opportunity from Coach McLean and the whole athletic department in putting their trust in me and hiring me onto the team," Johansen said. "Coach Paul and Coach McLean have built a solid and winning foundation for this program, and I am stoked to be a part of it and building upon the winning culture. It was really clear to me that this is a team I want to be a part of."
Before joining the UWF softball, Johansen was an assistant coach with Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, for four years. In 2016, Johansen helped lead the team to 28 wins, which was the third-highest single-season win total in program history, and the Lady Hornets led the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in team batting average (.321), runs scored (296), hits (482), doubles (92), and home runs (38).
Johansen also helped coach ASU to its first SWAC championship, which helped clinch an NCAA Tournament berth. Before ASU, Johansen served as the assistant softball coach for Auburn University at Montgomery and played a role in leading the team to the 2014 NAIA National Championship. In the summer of 2017, Johansen also coached the Swedish National Team in the European National Championships.
Softball head coach
Ashliegh McLean, who is entering her first year as head coach, is very optimistic with the addition of Johansen.
"I'm really happy to add Emma to the staff," McLean said. "It's great to add a former Argonaut and also someone who has played at a championship level and knows what it takes to get to that level.
Like McLean, Johansen is also a former player for UWF. In 2012, she was selected to the Gulf South All-Conference team where she posted a .382 batting average and a team-leading .459 on-base percentage.
