Dr.  Martha Saunders has spent more than 30 years in higher education, serving as President of UWF from 2016 to 2025. Under her leadership as president, the University of West Florida transformed into a first-choice institution. Dr. Saunders also was an unwavering supporter and catalyst for the growth of UWF athletics.

During her time as president, Dr. Saunders was a part of three national championship teams, including men's tennis in 2017, football in 2019 and men's golf in 2025. There were 45 Gulf South Conference titles and three GSC All Sport Trophies captured during her tenure leading the university.

Dr. Saunders helped bring the football team's home games to the UWF campus after playing games at Blue Wahoos Stadium. She also led the charge on the building and opening of the Darrell Gooden Center and Sandy Sansing Sports Medicine Center.

In addition to her roles within UWF athletics, Dr. Saunders also served as the Vice Chair of the Executive committee for the GSC.

What are some of your most memorable moments in UWF Athletics?

I loved celebrating the championships and sharing the good news with the UWF community.  The athletic program was a real source of pride for me and provided me with a rather stunning collection of championship jewelry.

What are some of the stories that you have enjoyed telling?

We had a number of wild and crazy rides together, but the decision to build a football stadium is seared into my memory.  Dave Scott and his dynamic team got busy and constructed a workable temporary stadium in only six months time.  I was blown away and very, very, very grateful.

"The caliber and dedication of UWF's coaching staff made a lasting impression on me," Saunders wrote. "They are devoted, professional, loyal Argos. Thousands of student athletes owe them a debt of thanks."
