Byron “Jake” Johnson became the Men’s Golf Head Coach at West Florida from 1985 to 1992. He put the men’s golf program on the map with a series of awards and accomplishments. Under his leadership, the UWF Men’s Golf Team placed first in seven tournaments. In 1986, West Florida won the Prestigious Junior/Senior Championship in Alexandria City, Alabama. Also in 1986, the Argonauts placed first at the West Florida Match Play Championship in Scenic Hills and the Mobile Invitational. By 1987, the team had developed a taste for victory and won the West Florida Match Play Championship and Mobile Invitational again. In 1988, they placed first again in the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile. The first four years under Coach Johnson’s direction, the team placed in NAIA Ranking as 23rd, then 3rd, 17th, and 4th in the nation.
