CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The UWF women's basketball team suffered a scoring drought at the wrong time Thursday night. Holding a one-point lead early in the fourth quarter, the Argos went 6:45 without a point while Lee took advantage to score a dozen unanswered en route to a 60-51 win at Walker Arena.
UWF (8-4, 3-2 Gulf South) shot just 33 percent overall and went 0-for-5 with three turnovers during the pivotal stretch in the final quarter.
Lee, meanwhile, got a layup and free throw from Carrie Cheeks, two free throws from Shelby Brown and a pair of 3-point plays from Maddie Long to extend the lead to double digits with 3:45 remaining.
Shami Goodman led all players with a game-high 22 points, making seven field goals and 7-of-9 free throws. She had 13 of UWF's 19 second-half points. Halee Nieman and Jade Davis finished with nine points apiece, but just two each after the intermission.
Lee (11-3, 4-2) shot 43 percent for the night, including 46 percent in the second half and 7-of-11 in the third quarter. Long led the Lady Flames with 14 points off the bench – including 12 in the final 13:06.
UWF was outrebounded by a 40-27 margin and was outscored 30-16 in the paint. Both teams had nine second-chance points but all of Lee's came in the second half and three in the deciding 12-0 run.
The fast-paced first quarter had four lead changes before ending tied at 20. UWF scored the first bucket in the second period and led by as many as seven, 32-25, after a Davis steal and layup. But Cheeks made a free throw and layup in the final 90 seconds to pull the home squad to within 32-28 to end the half.
UWF will return home for a 2-game homestand against the league's Mississippi schools, beginning Sunday afternoon against Mississippi College (5-8, 1-6). Tip-off at the UWF Field House is set for 2:00 p.m. The game will be followed by the men's game at 4:00 p.m.
