PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida men’s cross country team posted a strong finish at the Gulf Coast Stampede held at the Escambia County Equestrian Center on Saturday morning, placing second out of 13 teams in the 8k run. Harding edged UWF for the team title, but UWF finished ahead of Gulf South Conference rivals West Alabama, Valdosta State and Christian Brothers.
“I’m real happy with our times today,” said head coach John Bergen. “We were looking forward to seeing how we would do against some of our conference opponents like West Alabama, and we stepped up today.”
Juniors Martinique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) and Dominique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) were the top finishers for the Argonauts, placing third and seventh, respectively. Martinique’s time of 25:56 was a personal best in the 8k, and Dominique posted his best time of the season at 26:17. Senior Eddie Pagan (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) crossed the line at 26:20.80 and placed 10th, giving UWF three top 10 finishers.
UWF also had four finishers from the 11 through 20 spots, including three freshmen. Roman Kowalski (Pensacola, Fla./Catholic HS) and Chris Roach (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease HS), both freshmen, finished 14th and 15th, respectively. Both Kowalski (26:37) and Roach (26:41) posted personal bests in the 8k. Senior Jared Black (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon HS) was close behind in 17th place at 26:42, and he was followed by freshman Cody Haden (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) in 18th place at 26:43.
The Argos had their entire roster competing on Saturday. Freshman Brandon Skeie (West Creek, N.J./Southern Regional HS) had a strong showing in 33rd place at 27:54, and he was followed by sophomore Titus Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya/Tenwek HS) at 28:01. Senior Tyler Bowman (Pensacola, Fla./West Florida HS) crossed the line at 28:08, and he was followed by freshman Robert Abellera (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida HS) at 29:16.
Harding’s Philip Biwott took the individual title at 25:20, crossing the line 34 seconds before the rest of the field. The Bisons had four of the first five finishers to clinch the team title.
The Argonauts will have one more meet, the MC/Watson Ford Invitational on Oct. 7, before starting the postseason at the GSC Championships on Oct. 22. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
