PENSACOLA, Fla. – In its biggest regular-season meet of the spring, the No. 10 University of West Florida women's swimming and diving teams will head to Atlanta for a double-dual meet meet against Emory and NSISC rival Delta State. The meet is scheduled for an 11 a.m. ET start and will feature a live video broadcast with play-by-play, the link for which can be found on GoArgos.com.
The Argonauts have been dominant since returning to the pool early in January, with wins over Ouachita Baptist at home and Birmingham Southern and Sewanee on the road. The results continue a strong season that UWF put together in the fall, when the team hosted first-year programs Loyola New Orleans and Keiser and took wins in each side of the double-dual. UWF then took a big win against No. 22 Florida Southern in early November and ran away with a win at the Panther Invitational two weeks later, defeating North Florida, Saint Leo, Lynn and Florida Tech.
The meet at Birmingham Southern was the most recent for West Florida, and the team, which won 15 of 16 events at the meet, was led by
Madeline Pitt and
Theresa Michalak. Michalak took wins in the 200 Fly (2:06.15) and 200 IM (2:06.99), while Pitt paced the field by 16 seconds in the 500 Free (5:13.37) and recorded the third-best time in school history in the 200 Fly (2:06.79).
Freshmen
Brooke Ferrara,
Taby Read-Cayton,
Sophie Roy and
Lauren Johnson also stood out against BSC. Ferrara won all three events she participated in, with victories in the 50 Free and 100 Fly and taking the lead leg on the winning 200 Medley Relay team. Roy and Johnson swam on the same 200 Medley Relay team, Roy won the 100 Breast and Johnson swam the second-fastest leadoff leg in the 200 Free Relay to wrap things up on Friday. Read Cayton took a win in the 100 Free and finished second in the 100 Back.
And the divers have been in top form this year, as well.
Monica Amaral has won all but one 3-meter event she has competed in this year, and all five divers have defeated at least one DI diver during the course of the season.
Emory is the top-ranked team in DIII, according to the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll. The Eagles took a 157-108 win over Birmingham Southern last weekend and defeated DII opponents Florida Southern and Queens University of Charlotte early in the fall season.
A strength for No. 4 Delta State has been in the distance events, where the team is led by Caroline Jouisse and Melanie Tombers. Each member of the duo has recorded an A-cut in the 500 Free and rank third and fourth in the event nationally, and they hold the top two spots in DII in the 1000 Free. UWF is 3-3 all-time in head-to-head matchups against DSU, but the Argonauts have taken two of the last three.
This is the final meet before the NSISC Championships on February 15-18, hosted by Delta State in Cleveland, Mississippi. UWF has won the last two NSISC Championships.
